Friends penicillin was not discovered purposely but the discovery of penicillin was accidental.
Alexander Fleming accidentally discovered antibiotic penicillin in 1928.
So till the question is ....how the discovery of penicillin is accidental ???
After finishing his work in his laboratory Fleming leave the petri plates cultured with S. aureus near the wash basin for washing and he went for vacation.
When he came back from vacation , he found that lab attendant did not done his job that is washing of that petri plates. When Fleming observed that plates he found that there is contamination of these plates with green mold which later on found that it was Penicillium notatum and he observed that this contaminant does not allow the growth of Staphylococcus aureus , it means this green mold produces something that is antibiotic and this antibiotic actually inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus forming zone of inhibition surrounding to that contaminant green mold.
Later on after more research that mold was isolated and grown in a laboratory and used to produce penicillin antibiotic on commercial scale.
In this way penicillin was discovered accidentally not purposely.
Thanks!!!!!
